Why Won’t My Transmission Shift?

A transmission that will not shift, stays in one gear, or refuses to engage needs diagnosis before parts are replaced. Electronic, hydraulic and mechanical causes can produce similar symptoms.

TRANSMAX NOTE: This guide is educational. Vehicle symptoms can have more than one cause, so diagnosis is required before deciding what repair is appropriate.

01

Electronic control faults

Sensors, wiring, solenoids or module communication can affect shift commands.

02

Hydraulic pressure concerns

Fluid level, pump performance, valve-body problems or leaks can reduce clutch apply pressure.

03

Internal mechanical failure

Clutches, drums, shafts, gearsets or other internal components can fail or wear.

04

Manual clutch or linkage

On manual transmissions, clutch release, hydraulics or linkage can prevent normal gear engagement.

05

Fail-safe mode

Some vehicles intentionally remain in a limited gear range when the control system detects a serious fault.
