What Causes a Transmission to Slip?

“Slipping” usually describes engine speed increasing without a matching increase in vehicle speed. Several mechanical, hydraulic and electronic issues can contribute to that feeling.

TRANSMAX NOTE: This guide is educational. Vehicle symptoms can have more than one cause, so diagnosis is required before deciding what repair is appropriate.

01

Fluid level or pressure problems

Low fluid, leakage or hydraulic pressure concerns can interfere with clutch application.

02

Worn friction components

Internal clutch or band wear can reduce the transmission’s ability to hold power.

03

Valve-body or solenoid concerns

Hydraulic control components and electronically controlled solenoids can affect shift timing and pressure.

04

Torque converter problems

Some converter concerns can be perceived as slipping, shuddering or poor power transfer.

05

Control-system faults

Sensor data, wiring, modules and adaptive strategies can influence transmission operation.
