Built vs. Stock Transmissions

The word “built” can mean different things. The right transmission configuration depends on the vehicle, intended use, engine output, towing demands and the owner’s goals.

TRANSMAX NOTE: This guide is educational. Vehicle symptoms can have more than one cause, so diagnosis is required before deciding what repair is appropriate.

01

Stock configuration

Designed around the original vehicle power level, driving characteristics and manufacturer calibration.

02

Rebuilt transmission

A failed or worn unit is disassembled, inspected, repaired and reassembled with required replacement components.

03

Performance-oriented build

Selected components or calibration may be chosen for increased power, towing or specialized use.

04

Stronger is not always better everywhere

Changes to friction materials, pressure, shift feel or internal clearances should match the actual application.

05

The vehicle matters

Engine modifications, tire size, gearing, vehicle weight and intended use can all influence the correct build strategy.
