CVT vs. Conventional Automatic Transmission

A continuously variable transmission and a conventional automatic can both shift automatically, but they achieve their ratios in very different ways.

TRANSMAX NOTE: This guide is educational. Vehicle symptoms can have more than one cause, so diagnosis is required before deciding what repair is appropriate.

01

Conventional automatic

Typically uses planetary gearsets, friction elements and hydraulic/electronic controls to select fixed ratios.

02

CVT

Uses a continuously variable ratio system that may rely on pulleys, a belt or chain, and specialized control logic.

03

Different driving feel

CVTs can hold engine RPM differently during acceleration instead of producing distinct traditional shifts.

04

Different service requirements

Fluid specifications, diagnostic procedures and repair options can vary substantially by design.

05

Symptoms need context

A behavior that feels unusual compared with a conventional automatic may be normal for a particular CVT—or may be a sign that testing is needed.
