2013–2018 Nissan Altima V6 CVT Judder P17F0/P17F1: Ocala Guide

2013–2018 Nissan Altima V6 CVT shudder: an Ocala repair guide

Does your Nissan Altima shake, bump, or judder under acceleration? Has a shop found Nissan CVT fault code P17F0 or P17F1? Before paying for a transmission replacement or an unproven “flush cure,” find out exactly which CVT is installed and whether Nissan’s current diagnostic guidance applies. Nissan issued revised technical service bulletin NTB17-039Q on December 15, 2023, for certain V6-powered CVTs.

For Altima drivers in Ocala, Belleview, Silver Springs, and Marion County, Transmax Transmissions & Auto Repair can inspect transmission symptoms at 4211 NE 36th Ave, Ocala, FL 34479. Schedule a transmission diagnostic appointment or call (352) 622-6054.

Which Nissan Altimas does bulletin NTB17-039Q cover?

The December 2023 Nissan bulletin explicitly lists 2013–2018 Nissan Altima (L33) vehicles with a V6 engine and CVT. It does not establish a universal repair procedure for every Altima or every four-cylinder CVT. The engine and transmission configuration are crucial, even when two cars have similar symptoms.

What must be confirmed first?

  1. The driver actually reports a transmission judder: a shake, shudder, multiple bumps or vibration.
  2. P17F0 or P17F1 is stored in the relevant transmission controls.
  3. The vehicle meets the bulletin’s application details. Nissan states this particular bulletin does not apply when unrelated DTCs are stored; those conditions need another diagnostic approach.

A model year or fault code alone is not a final diagnosis. Owners of four-cylinder Altimas should seek a model-appropriate diagnosis instead of applying this V6-only bulletin to the wrong CVT.

What are the typical CVT judder symptoms?

Drivers may report a rumble-strip-like shake during acceleration, repeated small bumps, vibration at a steady throttle setting, or a feeling that power delivery is not smooth. Some complain of hesitation or RPM rising without the expected response. A CVT can normally sound and behave differently from a stepped automatic, but persistent vibration or a real loss of driving power deserves investigation.

Engine misfires, ignition faults, axle or tire vibration, mounts, and other driveline issues can imitate transmission shudder. Do not buy a transmission on a symptom description alone. Our general shudder guide explains these distinctions.

P17F0 versus P17F1: the repair path is not the same

P17F0 – CVT_JUDDER (T/M INSPECTION)

For a case that meets all the bulletin criteria, Nissan’s P17F0 repair path involves removal of the control valve assembly, replacement of an internal CVT subassembly, and installation of a new valve body. This is a trained-technician procedure, not a standing recommendation that every car with the code requires the same repair.

P17F1 – CVT_JUDDER (C/U INSPECTION)

For a qualifying P17F1 case, Nissan instructs technicians to remove the control valve assembly and inspect the internal CVT chain. If the chain passes the manufacturer’s specified criteria, the flow chart allows a valve-body-only path. If it does not, the specified internal subassembly and valve body may both be necessary. Nissan also directs technicians to check the transmission control module part number and update its calibration when applicable.

The distinction affects cost, scope, and parts selection. Neither code by itself provides a guaranteed diagnosis or a fixed-price repair estimate. If additional DTCs are stored, start with the relevant wider diagnostic procedure rather than forcing the car into NTB17-039Q.

How should a transmission shop evaluate a shuddering Altima?

Step 1: Identify the exact car and driving complaint

Confirm the model year, VIN, 3.5-liter V6 engine, transmission variant, mileage and service history. Record the road speed, throttle position, whether the car is cold or hot, and whether warning lights appear. A controlled road test may distinguish repeated CVT judder from an engine or axle vibration.

Step 2: Read transmission-specific diagnostic information

Retrieve relevant transmission and powertrain codes, stored data and calibration information. A basic generic OBD scan may not tell the entire story. Match actual codes and observed behavior to current Nissan service guidance, not an Internet symptom list.

Step 3: Inspect external and fluid-related concerns

Look for leaks, damaged wiring, connectors, cooler issues, signs of fluid contamination and other causes of poor operation. Internal debris or significant mechanical noise can alter the appropriate repair discussion. Fluid appearance alone does not justify replacing a complete CVT.

Step 4: Explain repair options with evidence

Depending on what the testing establishes, a repair could involve an external fix, valve body, required calibration, approved internal CVT work or replacement of a severely damaged assembly. Ask for the test results, full estimated cost and verification plan before approving a major repair. See our transmission diagnostics process and Ocala CVT service.

2017–2018 Nissan Altima CVT warranty extension: 84 months or 84,000 miles

Nissan’s November 2, 2023 revised campaign bulletin lists certain 2017–2018 Altima (L33) vehicles under a CVT warranty extension. For qualifying vehicles, the original 60-month/60,000-mile coverage was extended to 84 months/84,000 miles, whichever comes first. Its scope includes specified CVT internal components, the control valve body, torque converter, applicable seals and cooling components, and certain control-module programming.

Important for October 2026: a seven-year term is measured against the particular vehicle’s original in-service date, not simply its model year. Many 2017–2018 cars will already be outside that time window, and a vehicle may exceed 84,000 miles sooner. Do not promise free repairs based on the article or model year. Nissan directs authorized dealers to check the VIN and program eligibility, including applicable exclusions and any relevant owner decisions.

Older 2013–2016 Altimas are not part of that specific 2023 extension; prior programs and dates must be investigated separately. Before paying for major work, ask a Nissan dealer whether your VIN has any remaining manufacturer warranty, relevant customer support initiative or potential goodwill review. Transmax may diagnose the car, but Nissan-program claims must be handled under Nissan’s authorized dealer rules.

Is P17F0/P17F1 a Nissan safety recall?

No blanket safety recall is established by the technical bulletin or 2023 warranty bulletin. A TSB is manufacturer technical guidance; a warranty extension has eligibility limits; a safety recall is a different legal program. Check actual open recalls through Nissan’s VIN recall tool or NHTSA’s VIN lookup. Manufacturer coverage for a specific CVT repair requires separate dealer verification.

Can a CVT fluid service fix the shaking?

Not reliably if the cause is internal chain, pulley, or valve-body damage. Proper fluid condition and level matter, but an indiscriminate flush is not a substitute for testing. Nissan’s 2017 Altima owner’s manual specifies Nissan CVT Fluid NS-3 or a suitable equivalent, warns against mixing it with incompatible fluids, and expressly says not to use ordinary automatic-transmission fluid. Incorrect fluid or procedure can create further damage.

Discuss maintenance after establishing what is wrong. Our transmission fluid and maintenance service page explains the difference between routine care and repair diagnosis.

When should you stop driving and consider a tow?

If the Altima suddenly loses drive, cannot merge or accelerate safely, makes serious mechanical noise, or repeatedly slips with little forward motion, pull over safely. Avoid trying to reproduce the fault in busy Ocala traffic or on I-75. A tow can prevent a dangerous roadside situation and further drivetrain damage. A drivability complaint requires the same caution whether the ultimate cause is the CVT or another component.
