Ford 6R80 Recall 26S28: Downshifts, Leadframe & Repair

Ford 6R80 Transmission Recall 26S28 and diagnosis in Ocala. This article reviews Ford’s April 2026 recall and how owners should distinguish safety recall work from separate mechanical repairs.

2026 6R80 Recall Information

Details from Ford and NHTSA are below.

Updated October 11, 2026. Ford’s April 14, 2026 filing covers certain 2015–2017 F-150 trucks equipped with the six-speed 6R80 automatic. The affected production range is March 12, 2014–August 18, 2017, with approximately 1.39 million potentially involved vehicles. Check the actual VIN; a matching model year does not guarantee that a particular truck is included.

The safety concern is an unintended downshift into second gear. Such a shift may rapidly slow the vehicle and could cause loss of control. Do not try to reproduce it at highway speed. If the vehicle behaves unpredictably, stop safely and arrange help.

Official filing: NHTSA recall 26V237 / Ford 26S28 (April 2026).

Why Can a 6R80 Downshift Without Driver Input?

Ford identified electrical-connection degradation in the transmission leadframe associated with heat cycling and vibration. A disturbed transmission range sensor (TRS) signal can lead the powertrain control module (PCM) to select the wrong gear. Some drivers also see a check-engine or wrench light.

For eligible VINs, a Ford or Lincoln dealer updates the PCM calibration at no charge. This changes control behavior but does not repair worn clutches or internal mechanical damage. First check your truck at NHTSA’s recall lookup.

Ford Program 26N04

Ford issued new 6R80 leadframe service guidance in July 2026. Conditions vary by truck; dealer verification is necessary.

Additional program details follow.

The program sets a 15-year or 150,000-mile coverage period measured from the vehicle warranty start date. Ford also describes a temporary exception for certain trucks already beyond the mileage limit, lasting through July 31, 2027. A dealership must verify that the specific vehicle qualifies.

The diagnostic codes identified in Ford’s 26N04 instructions are P0705, P0706, P0707 and P1702. Codes and warning-light status must be documented during the dealer’s eligibility process. This program is separate from the safety recall itself.

Transmission Symptoms and Diagnostics

Different mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic faults may have similar symptoms.

Unexpected Downshift

Uncommanded gear changes and rapid deceleration are the specific safety concern in the 2026 Ford recall. The first action is a VIN recall check. If the symptom makes the truck unsafe, avoid further driving until the cause is addressed.

Check-Engine or Wrench Light

Preserve stored and pending fault codes and the conditions under which they appeared. Restarting the vehicle can make an intermittent problem harder to document.

Unusual shifting, delayed engagement and fluid concerns may have different causes. A qualified technician should diagnose the actual complaint before suggesting parts.

Reverse Engagement Complaint: A Separate Ford Bulletin

Ford Technical Service Bulletin 20-2060, issued March 6, 2020, describes certain 2015–2017 6R80 F-150s with intermittent Reverse or neutral behavior when moving slowly from Manual 1/2 to Reverse, with no diagnostic codes. This is a narrowly defined concern and should not be used to explain every reverse problem.

For vehicles meeting TSB 20-2060’s precise criteria, Ford directs technicians to update PCM software and complete an adaptive learning drive cycle. A different symptom or stored fault codes require the appropriate separate diagnosis. See Ford’s official 2020 TSB 20-2060.

Older 6R80 Safety Campaigns

Some earlier F-150 model years were covered by different Ford recall campaigns. The 2019 19S07 campaign concerns output-speed information and is not the same as the 2026 campaign. Always check the VIN.

Diagnostic Approach Before a Paid Transmission Repair

Start with the VIN, model year, transmission identification, mileage, and all Ford recall or service-program records. Preserve the customer’s description of the symptom and any stored trouble codes. A sudden uncommanded downshift needs safety-related recall attention rather than a risky road test.

  1. Confirm VIN, gear count and applicable Ford campaigns.
  2. Record the exact symptom and when it occurs, without deliberately provoking a dangerous downshift.
  3. Preserve fault codes, freeze frames and warning-light history.
  4. Inspect for leaks, correct fluid level and electrical concerns using current service instructions.
  5. Evaluate any remaining hydraulic, torque-converter, or internal mechanical problem only after recall eligibility is addressed.

Repair, Rebuild, or Replace the Ford 6R80?

A targeted repair may be appropriate when diagnostics identify a serviceable component and the rest of the unit remains healthy. Rebuilding may be necessary when internal clutch wear, contamination, hydraulic damage or damaged hard parts are confirmed.

Replacement can be justified when confirmed damage, part availability, downtime or written warranty terms make it the better option. Compare transmission rebuilding in Ocala with our article on rebuilding versus buying another vehicle. Neither a recall notice nor an isolated trouble code is a sufficient basis to recommend a full rebuild.

Ford 6R80 Recall and Repair FAQs

Does every 2015–2017 F-150 qualify for recall 26S28?

No. The recall is VIN-specific. A Ford dealer or the NHTSA VIN lookup can determine whether a particular truck is affected and whether the repair remains open.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. The manufacturer supplies the safety recall remedy without charge for eligible vehicles at an authorized Ford or Lincoln dealer. Separate mechanical repairs are not automatically included.

Will Ford replace every 6R80 molded leadframe at no charge?

No. Program 26N04 requires a qualifying VIN, a relevant warning indicator, particular stored codes, coverage eligibility, and dealership approval. It is a distinct program from the PCM software recall.

Can a software update fix a mechanically slipping 6R80?

Not if the transmission has independent clutch or hard-part damage. A recall calibration changes control behavior; persistent slipping still needs diagnosis.

Is a Ford 6R80 the same as the 10R80?

No. The 6R80 is a six-speed automatic and the 10R80 has ten forward ratios. Parts, diagnostics and applicable campaigns are different. Read our separate Ford 10R80 guide.

What fluid is used in a 6R80?

Ford’s July 2026 26N04 procedure lists Motorcraft MERCON LV. Confirm the fluid type and correct level-check procedure for the exact truck before service.
