2017–2019 Colorado/Canyon 8L45 Shudder: Ocala Repair Guide

Colorado and Canyon 8L45 shudder: what Ocala drivers should know

A 2017–2019 Chevrolet Colorado or GMC Canyon may develop a vibration during gentle acceleration that feels like driving across rumble strips. On particular V6 trucks with the 8-speed automatic, GM has documented a possible torque-converter clutch (TCC) shudder. Not every vibration is transmission-related, and the bulletin is not a blanket diagnosis. If you drive in Ocala, Belleview, Silver Springs, or elsewhere in Marion County, a vehicle-specific diagnosis can help avoid replacing a good transmission.

Which trucks are covered by GM’s technical guidance?

GM Service Bulletin 18-NA-355, April 2020 lists certain 2017–2019 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon models equipped with the LGZ engine and M5T eight-speed automatic, with a March 1, 2019 production-date breakpoint. The table must be checked against the exact vehicle configuration and VIN; a model year alone does not establish applicability. Older bulletin 18-NA-177 discusses certain 2017–2018 Colorado/Canyon 8L45 vehicles. These documents are technical service guidance, not proof of a currently open recall or free repair. GM TechLink also discusses later model-year shudder diagnosis; its later population should not be conflated with this bulletin’s production window.

What does torque-converter clutch shudder feel like?

Light-throttle vibration at steady speed

GM describes shake or shudder during light throttle acceleration at about 25–80 mph while the transmission is not actively shifting. Drivers may describe rapid rumble-strip-like vibration, sometimes confused with road texture or wheel imbalance. A symptom description is a starting point for testing, not a conclusive result.

Other symptoms require separate diagnosis

Hard shifts, a check-engine light, engine misfire, wheel or tire vibration, driveshaft issues, mounting problems, or engine surge can produce similar complaints. A technician should reproduce the concern safely, review diagnostic trouble codes and operating data, and separate converter-clutch behavior from engine or driveline faults.

How GM’s service bulletin approaches the problem

For eligible pre-breakpoint vehicles presenting the specified condition, 18-NA-355 describes a precise exchange procedure using the specified Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP fluid and approved equipment. It expressly cautions that the procedure should only be completed once on a vehicle. The appropriate fluid, level-setting steps and full service information matter; a generic flush or additive is not interchangeable with the manufacturer procedure.

For vehicles built after the bulletin’s date breakpoint, GM directs normal diagnostic procedures because the later factory fill was already updated. For a recurring complaint after a previous exchange, the bulletin calls for further diagnosis with proper diagnostic tools rather than blindly repeating the exchange. An affected transmission should not automatically be rebuilt or replaced without confirming the actual fault.

When should you schedule an Ocala transmission diagnosis?

Arrange inspection if the vibration is recurring, worsening, accompanied by warning lights, or making the truck difficult to drive. If the truck loses propulsion, severely slips, or behaves unpredictably, stop in a safe location and consider towing. Document your model year, mileage, when the symptom occurs, and any previous transmission service to help the shop narrow down the cause.

Frequently asked questions

Does every 2017–2019 Colorado or Canyon qualify for the bulletin?

No. Applicability depends on the transmission, engine, production date, market, and condition. Confirm using the VIN and current GM service information.

Does transmission shudder always mean a bad torque converter?

No. Engine misfires, tire and driveline vibrations, fluid concerns, and other faults can resemble torque converter clutch shudder.

Should I repeat the fluid exchange if the vibration returns?

GM Bulletin 18-NA-355 says the specified procedure should be performed only once per vehicle; returning symptoms require further diagnosis.

Is the repair free under a recall?

A service bulletin is not automatically a safety recall or a guarantee of free repair. Check VIN-specific warranty and recall eligibility.

Can Transmax diagnose my Colorado or Canyon in Ocala?

Yes. Request a transmission diagnosis to review the symptoms, scan data and appropriate next steps before authorizing repair.
